Tom Burke Endowment Fund
Creates Junior Award
Lifelong Angus sale manager, author, speaker, Angus enthusiast, youth supporter and former American Angus Association board member Tom Burke of Platte City, Mo., has been selected as the 2017 inductee into the Saddle & Sirloin Portrait Gallery, largely considered the highest honor in the livestock industry.
The Saddle & Sirloin Portrait Gallery was established in 1903 and recognizes one individual annually for their lifetime of exceptional service to the livestock business, both nationally and internationally. The portrait gallery includes 354 portraits of distinguished leaders of the livestock industry and is on permanent display at the Kentucky Fair & Exposition Center in Louisville, Ky.
A customary practice for Saddle & Sirloin Portrait Gallery inductees is to designate a 501(c)(3) organization to receive charitable contributions raised in honor of the distinguished honoree. Funds are used to offset project expenses and Burke’s fundraising effort includes establishing the Tom Burke Angus Youth Endowment Fund through the Angus Foundation.

Cattle Market Trends
The cattle market has experienced much change over the last twelve months, reaching near-record lows last fall — followed by a big upward swing this spring. CattleFax Senior Analyst Kevin Good says a move of this magnitude has happened only twice in industry history, where the fall lows transitioned into spring highs.
“The market coming off the cycle high of 2014, it just had to go more than likely cheaper than it needed to, to find some support. It did that last October, as we look about the turn of events from then to now, one of the big driving factors is exports,” Good said. “Exports have out performed exports for beef, pork, and poultry. And imports have remained well below year-ago levels, as well.”
With herd expansion expected this year, and next, the nation’s beef supply will continue to grow, and Good says, global exports will continue to play a significant role in supporting a stronger cattle market.

Building a Brand
We have all heard the phrase “building a brand.” What does this truly mean? Does it mean an actual character that is branded onto your animals? Does it mean a slogan or logo that you have created? Does it represent the quality of product that people automatically think of when they hear your name? I am going to try to describe what I think “building a brand” truly means.
As human beings, we subconsciously relate quality to a name when we hear it. For example, when we hear the word Cadillac, we automatically think of a luxury car. When we hear the name Michael Jordan, we think of a phenomenal basketball player. As cattlemen and cattlewomen, when we hear the words Certified Angus Beef®, we think of a high-quality steak. We have an automatic reaction in our minds when we hear each of these names.
What does this mean for the Angus business? Continue reading the Angus Beef Bulletin EXTRA article online.
