New Angus Foundation
Scholarship Awards $3,000

The Angus Foundation announced last year their continued investment in Angus youth education by adding the Allied Angus Breeders Scholarship to the organization’s ever-growing scholarship portfolio. The Angus Foundation Board of Directors approved funds to provide $1,000 scholarships to three youth who use Angus genetics in their seedstock or commercial operations.

The first-ever Allied Angus Breeders Scholarship recipients are: Shelby Schiefelbein, Kimball, Minn., a Texas A&M University sophomore; Callie Kukuchka, Belle Fourche, S.D., a South Dakota State University freshman; and Nico Menjivar, Lompoc, Calif., a Conners State College sophomore.

“The Angus Foundation is thrilled to award these three outstanding youth with scholarships for the coming school year,” says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “They are the future leaders of the breed and our beef cattle industry, and we hope these scholarships will help them reach their goals of acquiring a higher education.”

Five judges, comprised of two Angus Foundation directors, two Angus industry representatives and one beef cattle industry leader, evaluated the applications and selected recipients based on academic achievements, agricultural involvement, and four essay responses on the beef cattle industry and the Angus breed.

USDA Designates Primary Natural Disaster Areas
in Illinois, Indiana

The USDA has designated 87 counties in Illinois and 53 counties in Indiana as primary natural disaster areas, both due to damages and losses caused by excessive rain and flooding that began earlier this summer. The department released detailed listings of each county in Illinois and Indiana, and producers are asked to go online for emergency assistance available to these and the surrounding areas.

All counties and city listed in the links above were designated natural disaster areas on Aug. 12, making all qualified farm operators in the designated areas eligible for low interest emergency (EM) loans from USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA), provided eligibility requirements are met.

Farmers in eligible counties have eight months from the date of the declaration to apply for loans to help cover part of their actual losses. FSA will consider each loan application on its own merits, taking into account the extent of losses, security available and repayment ability. FSA has a variety of programs, in addition to the EM loan program, to help eligible farmers recover from adversity.
