2015-2016 Roll Of Victory
Show Season Begins

This month’s All-American Angus Breeders’ Futurity in Louisville, Ky., marks the first official competition of the 2015-2016 Roll-of-Victory (ROV) show season, hosted by the American Angus Association. The season is open from June 1 through May 31.

Two new shows have been added to the line-up this year — the Nebraska State Fair and the Keystone International Livestock Expo (KILE). With the addition of these new shows, there is greater opportunity for Angus exhibitors to earn points toward top honors.

The ROV program is designed to give individual animals attention by awarding points based on show performances. Recognition is based on an animal’s placing at 18 open shows across the country — 12 recognition point shows and six super-point shows, which award a greater number of points than a recognition show. ROV points are awarded for show placings for class, division champion, reserve division champion, grand champion and reserve grand champion.

Points for the 2014-2015 year have been tallied. Awards for the champion show heifer, show bull and breeder of the year will be recognized and awarded at the 2015 Angus Means Business National Convention & Trade Show hosted Nov. 3-5 in Overland Park, Kan.

For more information on the ROV program, please view the full release on the Association’s website.

BQA Award Nominations Due June 20

Award applications for the 10th annual checkoff-funded National Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Award now are being accepted. The 2016 National BQA Awards recognize five winners in the areas of beef, dairy, marketing and education.

To submit an application online, visit this webpage. Applications are due via the online submission form by June 20, 2015.

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States may retain up to 50¢ on the dollar and forward the other 50¢ per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.

Farm Bureau Rural Entrepreneurship Challenge

The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) is now accepting applications for the Rural Entrepreneurship Challenge. Entrepreneurs will compete for $145,000 in startup funds. Applications must be submitted by June 30.

The competition provides an opportunity for individuals to showcase ideas and business innovations being cultivated in rural regions of the United States. It is the first national business competition focused exclusively on rural entrepreneurs working on food and agriculture businesses.

Competitors must have an idea for a business that is related to food and agriculture. Businesses related to food and agriculture include farms or ranches, value-added food processing, food hubs, community-supported agriculture programs (CSAs), farm-to-table restaurants and farmers’ markets. Businesses indirectly related to food and agriculture include support services such as crop scouting, agritourism, ag advertising agencies and ag technology companies.

Competitors must be based in a rural community as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau. Competitors’ primary residences or businesses must be located in a county with less than 50,000 residents or a town with less than 2,500 residents.
