FCS Financial Announces Changes
to Scholarship Program for 2015

Since 2004, FCS Financial has provided nearly $360,000 to Missouri high school seniors seeking higher education. This year, FCS Financial is pleased to announce an increase in the value of each scholarship from $1,000 to $1,500. Up to 35 scholarships will be awarded to children or grandchildren of FCS Financial members. The scholarship deadline is March 1 and recipients will be notified in April.

“Higher education is an important step for many young people to attain their future goals,” says David Janish, FCS Financial CEO. “Our scholarship program provides an opportunity to help the children and grandchildren of our member-owners achieve their educational goals.”

Applicants must be a graduating senior at a Missouri high school, a child or grandchild of an FCS Financial member, and attain a 2.5 or higher GPA, an ACT score of at least 26 or rank in the top 20% of their senior class. The scholarship applicants are then judged by a non-partisan committee on leadership roles, work experience, community involvement and essays. One recipient is selected from qualified applicants at each FCS Financial branch office. Up to 13 at-large recipients are also selected from all qualified applicants.

Apply online at www.myfcsfinancial.com. Click on Scholarships at the top of the web page. Relatives of FCS Financial board members or employees are not eligible.

Farm Bureau Distinguished Service Awards:
Don Borgman and Temple Grandin Honored

The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) presented its highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award, to Don Borgman and Temple Grandin during the 96th AFBF Annual Convention and IDEAg Trade Show.

AFBF established the Distinguished Service Award to honor individuals who have devoted their careers to serving agriculture.

Both farmer and industry executive, Don Borgman has been a strong advocate for agriculture for more than 40 years. A third-generation corn and soybean farmer from Missouri, Borgman continued to manage his farm while working full-time for John Deere. He retired last year as director of ag industry relations, where he played an integral role in the company’s efforts to support and promote renewable energy sources. Borgman was recognized early last year for his work by the National Biodiesel Board with a lifetime achievement award.

Borgman believes that farmers and ranchers should be in the spotlight sharing their stories, and this passion for farming brought him to serve on the board of the U.S. Farmers and Ranchers Alliance. He has also been actively involved in a number of other leading industry groups, including the National Association of Farm Broadcasters Foundation, the National Corn Growers Association and the American Soybean Association.

Temple Grandin has dedicated her life to improving animal welfare and handling. One of the most successful people in the world with autism, Grandin is the leading authority on farm animal behavior. Her unique ability to visualize from the animal’s perspective led her to design livestock processing systems that are more humane and efficient. Her systems for reducing animal stress in processing plants are being used throughout the country — and around the world. Grandin also developed an objective scoring system for assessing and handling cattle and pigs at meat plants. A number of major corporations now use this scorecard to help improve animal welfare.

Grandin, a professor of animal science at Colorado State University, also travels the country giving lectures and uses her status to bring awareness to autism. She is a prolific writer, with two books on the New York Times best-seller list, and has received scores of accolades for her work.

Free CFI Webinar Series:
Making Science Make Sense to Today’s Food Consumer

A free webinar series from The Center for Food Integrity (CFI) explores how the agriculture and food industries can effectively communicate complex technical and scientific information to a public that often doesn’t accept what scientific consensus says is true.

The series of six one-hour-long webinars, which begin Thursday, Jan. 15, are based on CFI’s new consumer trust research, “Cracking the Code on Food Issues: Insights from Moms, Millennials and Foodies.” The research provides a roadmap for those in today’s food system to help science make sense to an increasingly skeptical public and encourage consumers to consider sound science when making decisions about the food they eat.

To register for the following webinars log on to www.foodintegrity.org/research/2014-research-webinars. To download the 2014 CFI Consumer Trust Research report or learn more, visit www.foodintegrity.org or email CFI at learnmore@foodintegrity.org.
