Apply to Attend the Young Cattlemen’s Conference

For the 14th year, the Angus Foundation will sponsor one individual to attend the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) Young Cattlemen’s Conference (YCC). The application deadline is Jan. 10, 2015, and the application can be found on the Angus Foundation website.

YCC offers young leaders the chance to see firsthand and better understand all aspects of the beef industry. Attendees participate in a nationwide tour of the beef production chain from the ranch to the feedlot and to the packing plant, through marketing and regulatory affairs, and finally ending at consumer foodservice.

“Our sponsorship of one individual each year enables the Angus breed to have a representative who can then share the information they learned with their fellow Angus breeders,” says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “This is a positive educational experience for those who attend and we are glad we have the ability to sponsor an Angus breeder each year.”

The Angus Foundation’s sponsorship covers travel costs and registration fees. The applicant must be between 25 to 50 years old and must also be a member of the NCBA. Julie Ellingson, a fourth-generation Angus breeder from Saint Anthony, N.D., represented the Angus Foundation during the 2014 YCC and encourages cattlemen to take hold of the opportunity to attend.

“YCC is an excellent opportunity to network with other young industry professionals while learning about the opportunities and challenges that beef producers across the country face daily,” Ellingson said.

NCBA’s Cattlemen’s College Lineup
Set for Feb. 3-4 in San Antonio

The NCBA’s Cattlemen’s College®, now celebrating its 22nd year, has established a reputation as one of the most thorough cattle producer education programs in the nation. Sponsored by Zoetis, the 2015 edition of Cattlemen’s College offers a wide range of informative, hands-on educational workshops designed for cattle operations of every size and sector.

The program will be hosted Feb. 3-4, 2015, in San Antonio, Texas, headlining the first day of activities at the 2015 Cattle Industry Convention & NCBA Trade Show. Early registration for Cattlemen’s College and the convention ends Jan. 9, 2015.

Cattlemen’s College workshops include an outstanding lineup of industry experts during the course of two jam-packed days.

“Cattlemen’s College gives producers an opportunity to hear from some of the leading experts in topics that impact their cattle operations every day, as well as the chance to interact with those experts and ask questions,” said NCBA President and Texas cattleman Bob McCan. “Many of the presenters are legends in the beef industry, and the wide variety of classes offers something for every producer. We highly encourage cattlemen and women to take advantage of this informative and educational program.”

JSE Farms Announced as Canadian Angus Association Eastern Feedlot of the Year

The CAA is pleased to honor JSE Farms with the Eastern Feedlot of the Year Award. This award was presented at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto in the early weeks of November.

In 1971 Stan and Ila Eby bought and moved to a farm on the 9th Concession of Kincardine Township, Ont. They raised their family, Sandra, Steven and Jeff, there and marketed high-quality beef. By 1974 they had outgrown the existing facilities and made plans to build a new slatted-floor barn. This was one of two prototype facilities that were to be built in Ontario that year.

During his spare time Stan became heavily involved in the Bruce County Cattlemen’s Association and from there moved onto the Provincial, leading the industry through the Walkerton Water Crisis while president of the Ontario Cattlemen’s Association. Stan was elected to the Canadian Cattlemen’s (CCA) board and was sitting vice president in 2003 when bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) closed Canadian borders, sending the industry into a downward spiral. Serving as president of the CCA in 2004-2005, Stan’s easy way and commonsense approach helped rebuild the devastated industry.

Like Stan, Steve is compelled to get involved in the beef industry and his community. Steve is acting as a director at the Bruce County Cattlemen’s, director of Canadian Cattle Identification Agency, OMFRA Livestock Medicines Advisory Committee and is currently a director at Beef Farmers of Ontario sitting on the Government Relations, Nominations, Ontario Feeder Finance, Feedlot and Forage Insurance committees.

The farm on the 9th Concession has grown through the years to 700 acres of mixed pasture, hay and cash crop. The beef enterprise has grown to 850 head of cattle on site with additional backgrounding being done in western Canada. In 2013, it was Steve’s turn to take on the building of a new facility to replace the slatted-floor facility built by his father 39 years earlier. The new pack barn is a real show piece and something that Steve, wife Janine, and daughters Lauran and Rachel will enjoy for years to come.

The CAA extends congratulations to Stan, Ila, Steve, Janine and their family as the winners of the 2014 Eastern Feedlot of the Year Award. The CAA introduced the Feedlot of the Year Award four years ago to recognize feedlots that promote Angus to their customers and that feed Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed tagged cattle.

Canadian Angus Association 75-year Long-term Recognition Awards handed out at Royal Winter Fair

The CAA introduced 50- and 75-year awards to recognize those breeders who have been a member of the Association for 50 or 75 consecutive years. The long dedication of these producers to the Angus breed is essential to the overall success of the beef industry. The recipients of these awards were recognized at the Royal Agriculture Winter Fair in Toronto in November. Another recipient of these awards this year is the Earley Brothers from Ontario.

Eugene Earley established Earley Brothers in 1935 when he started an Angus herd. Eugene’s Irish ancestors had established Hillcrest Farms in Kerwood, Ont., in the mid-1800s.

Eugene’s middle son, George, was a very successful showman. As a 4-H member, he exhibited a grand champion steer in 1957 and 1958. Hillcrest Farms has exhibited more market and 4-H beef champions in live and carcass categories than any other operation in living memory. In addition to the Royal Winter Fair, Hillcrest has dominated the Western Fair at London, garnered titles in the Maritimes and won banners at Agribition.

In 1978, George became president of the CAA. It proved to be a challenging period due to the fight to enforce blood-testing results. Many registered-Angus cattle were removed from the registry because of failed tests; however, in the end, the integrity of the Angus breed had been ensured.

George Earley has been inducted into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame, the Ontario Agriculture Hall of Fame; was named Farmer of the Year in Middlesex County, received the Canadian Centennial 125-year Medal and was named Ontario Producer of the Year.

George and wife Lynda have four children, Mike, Martha, Tim and Sara. Today, Mike manages Earley Bros., but all four Earley children are involved in the business. Mike has managed Earley Bros. for the last 25 years. The CAA congratulates the Earley brothers and their families on receiving this award.
