Expert: Prepare Now by Downloading Disaster-related Publications to Mobile Devices
In conjunction with the state's Hurricane Preparedness Week and other preparedness efforts, the Texas AgriLife Extension Service has made many of its disaster and emergency-related materials available in e-book format for mobile device users.
"With hurricane season approaching, this is a key time for AgriLife Extension to again make Texas residents aware of its many hurricane preparedness and other disaster-related resources and to let them know which are now available as e-books," said Andy Vestal, AgriLife Extension director for homeland security and emergency management at Texas A&M University in College Station.

Missouri Cattlemen's Begins Search for
Executive Vice President
Missouri Cattlemen's Association (MCA) President Lonny Duckworth has announced the creation of a seven-member search committee to consult with the MCA Board of Directors in choosing the next executive vice president for the Association.
"The future of MCA is now in the hands of our membership," Duckworth said. "I'm excited about our search committee because the appointees represent every corner of the state and every sector of the Missouri beef industry. I know they are going to use their diverse perspectives to recommend an excellent new executive for MCA."
The search committee will be chaired by Jimmie Long, past president of MCA. The other members of the committee are Janet Akers, Henry County; Eldon Cole, Lawrence County; Chris Derks, Gentry County; David Dick, Pettis County; Ben Eggers, Audrain County; and David Patton, Maries County.
"We have the opportunity to position our Association to grow to a higher plateau," Duckworth said. "The search committee and officers have discussed this matter at length and are focused on securing an executive vice president that will help the Association achieve the next level."

The MCA Executive Committee has announced that Brent Haden will serve as interim executive vice president for the Association. Haden is a native of Mexico, Mo., and is a graduate of the University of Missouri and Harvard Law School. He is a partner at the Columbia law firm of Haden & Byrne and has served as the Association's Regulatory Counsel since 2011. Before returning to Columbia to found his law firm, Haden served as associate counsel for the Kansas Livestock Association and as chief of staff for the Kansas Speaker of the House.
Agriculture Secretary Vilsack Celebrates USDA's 150th Year of Service, Highlights Ways the 'Every Day, Every Way' Department Works for American People
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack May 15 marked the 150th anniversary of the USDA and highlighted the positive impact that USDA has on the life of Americans each day.
"For 150 years, USDA has supported our nation's economic prosperity and touched the lives of generations of Americans," said Vilsack. "I'm proud of the USDA employees who carry out President Lincoln's legacy throughout the country and around the world, making USDA a truly 'Every Day, Every Way' department. Whether improving domestic and international access to food, promoting nutrition and safety of our food supply, conserving our natural resources, advancing agricultural exports, or developing the rural economy, USDA helps Americans to lead better lives."

NAFB Foundation Scholarship Deadline is Near
Since 1977, the National Association of Farm Broadcasting (NAFB) Foundation has provided financial support and educational opportunities in the form of college scholarships to assist students in pursuit of careers in agricultural communications. Currently the NAFB Foundation offers three annual college scholarships, including two for $4,000, as well as the Glenn Kummerow Memorial Scholarship for $5,000. These scholarships are recognized at the National NAFB Convention, and the winners also receive an expense-paid trip to attend the convention as part of the award.
Scholarships are paid over two semesters. The first half of the funds will be applied to the fall semester 2012, while the second half will be applied to the spring semester 2013. Funds will be paid directly to the college/university once the recipient provides proper documentation outlined in the full release, available at www.nafb.com/index.aspx?mid=9376.
