Japan Set to Decide Fate of U.S. Beef Imports

Japan’s Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi told President Bush today that the country is poised to make a decision in the next few weeks regarding the resumption of U.S. beef imports, Japan Today reported.

Koizumi made the remarks during Bush’s trip to Asian nations this week. Although Koizumi didn’t provide a specific timeline, he reassured President Bush that the government will be in a position to make a decision following a series of public comments and Japan’s ongoing process by the Food Safety Commission (FSC).

House Committee Discusses Manure Use

The U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Environment and Hazardous Materials conducted a hearing today regarding the regulation of rural livestock manure, titled “Superfund Laws and Animal Agriculture.”

According to the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA), some members of Congress are considering regulating manure applications on ranches and farms under Superfund waste laws — accompanied by demanding reporting requirements and created to provide for cleanup of toxic waste dumps and hazardous chemical spills.

According to NCBA, if manure use falls under such regulations, every livestock and poultry operation or farming operation could become subject to comprehensive cleanup guidelines.

Grizzlies Could Be Removed From ESA List

NCBA announced yesterday that Interior Secretary Gale Norton has proposed removing the greater Yellowstone population of grizzly bears from the list of federal endangered species.

The Endangered Species Act (ESA) listings often require that ranchers remove livestock from grazing areas determined to be “conflict areas.” According to NCBA, in some circumstances, ranchers have actually lost their grazing allotments in areas inhabited by grizzly bears.

The proposal to delist the grizzly bear is to be published in the Federal Register on Nov. 17. More information is posted at http://mountain-prairie.fws.gov.
