Oct. 11, 2005 USDA Releases Animal Health Report The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) released the 2004 U.S. Animal Health Report Oct. 7. The report is the first of its kind, providing an overview of domestic animal health. According to the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), the report addresses U.S. animal health infrastructure, animal population demographics, and new initiatives and approaches to foreign animal disease surveillance. New animal health initiatives featured in the report include the National Animal Identification System (NAIS), the national surveillance unit located within the Centers for Epidemiology and Animal Health, and the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) enhanced surveillance plan. Johnes Education Program Launched The National Institute for Animal Agriculture (NIAA) has announced it will conduct a Johnes disease education program designed to minimize risks and control Johnes by educating producers, veterinarians and others about the bacterial disease. According to the NIAA, the National Johnes Education Initiative will help minimize the risk of Johnes infection by implementation of management practices, reduce the economic effects of the disease, and eliminate Johnes as a factor in dairy and beef production. NIAA is collaborating with USDA to initiate the strategic plan developed by the National Johnes Working Group, an NIAA release stated. For more information visit www.johnesdisease.org. USDA Gives $12.6 Million for Biomass Research Eleven biomass research, development and demonstration projects were selected to receive $12.6 million for the Biomass Research and Development Initiative, a joint effort of the USDA and the Department of Energy (DOE). Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns said the initiative is designed to enhance energy security and revitalize rural economies while developing renewable energy sources and expanding markets for agricultural products.
