House Postpones Labeling Law June 9, 2005 The U.S. House of Representatives voted yesterday to delay spending on implementation of mandatory country-of-origin labeling (also referred to as COL or COOL) by a 240-187 vote. The approved provision introduced in the fiscal year (FY) 2006 ag spending bill delays country-of-origin labeling for red meat until Sept. 30, 2007, according to Data Transmission Network (DTN). Last month, members of the agriculture subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee first voted on the provision in order to prevent the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) from spending money this year to institute labeling rules pertaining to meat. Once the provision reached the House floor, however, it met some debate. An amendment introduced by Reps. Dennis Rehberg (R-Mont.) and Darlene Hooley (D-Ore.) to remove the provision and counteract any delays failed, DTN reported. Now that the provision has passed the House, its fate lies within the Senate.
