The American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE) will have its annual meeting at the Westin Hotel in Ottawa. The event is co-hosted by the CSAE, the Canadian society for engineering in agricultural, food and biological systems. The meeting will cover a wide variety of topics, including food safety engineering, agricultural waste and odor management, soil and water remediation, renewable fuels and more. 2004 50th Annual TAMU Beef Cattle Short Course
Aug. 2-4, College Station, Texas
Texas A&M University will host the annual short course at the University Center and Rudder Tower, beginning at 8 a.m. on Aug. 2 and concluding at noon on Aug. 4. The program will address topics regarding bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), export markets, national animal identification (ID), genetic technology, selection tools, efficient management practices and more. Cattle-handling facilities, pasture and forage management, and pesticide applicator training will also be just a few of the subjects covered during the three-day event. Participants can attend morning workshops in the Cattlemens College, followed by afternoon general sessions. A trade show will host more than 90 ag businesses and services at Rudder Tower. Registration for the event costs $120 and includes education materials, course proceedings, trade show admittance, some meals and refreshments. Four-state backgrounding conference

The educational conference, titled "Backgrounding Calves: Options Under Drought Conditions," is focused on drought management options and using backgrounding to add value to cow-calf operations in the four-state region including South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming. The session will feature a variety of industry representatives and panel discussions. Registration for Tuesdays meeting will begin at 10 a.m. at the Holiday Inn in Billings. Wednesdays events will also begin at 10 a.m., with on-site registration at the Best Western Ramkota in Rapid City. Registration is $35, if made by July 29, or $45 at the door. 2004 Cattle Industry Summer Conference

The Cattlemens Beef Promotion and Research Board (CBB), NCBA, the American National CattleWomen Inc. (ANCW) and Cattle-Fax will host the summer meeting themed, "Riding Point for the Industry." Onsite registration opens at noon on Aug. 9, followed by executive committee meetings of the CBB, NCBA and ANCW, and a Cattle-Fax board of directors meeting. Beef industry issues forums and NCBA regional and state meetings will be Aug. 11; and the ANCW board meeting and a CBB update session are planned as well. 2004 Risk & Profit Conference and Trade Show

The theme of the 2004 Risk & Profit Conference will be "Advancing Ag Management with Economics." The event will be at the KSU Alumni Center in Manhattan and will focus on putting farmers and livestock producers in competitive positions by bringing them together with economic specialists in farm management, technology, marketing and policy issues.
Former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman is scheduled to be the keynote speaker Aug. 19, and a trade show will feature agribusiness goods and services. Expected conference topics include the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and its effects 10 years later; consumer reaction to BSE; agritourism; cattle price grids and much more.

Kansas Angus Assn tour

The annual two-day tour will begin at 6 p.m. at Mill Brae Ranch, Maple Hill, followed by dinner, entertainment and youth activities. Producing High-Quality-Grading Beef

The two-day event will feature specialists from throughout the Midwest and is designed to educate cattlemen on how to produce a high-quality beef product. Topics will include marbling, early weaning, implant regimen and their subsequent effects on quality grade. The Beef Quality Audit (BQA), DNA technology and production costs will be discussed. Tuesdays events will be at the Franklin County Farm Bureau Auditorium in Benton, and Wednesdays activities will take place at the Adams County Extension office in Quincy. The conference is sponsored by University of Illinois (U of I) Extension, the Illinois Beef Association, the Illinois Soybean Association and Illinois Checkoff Board, the Illinois Corn Marketing Board and the Senator Simon E. Reproductive strategies conference

The North Central Region Bovine Reproduction Task Force and a multistate Extension effort will sponsor the conference, titled "Applied Reproductive Strategies in Beef Cattle," at the Sandhills Convention Center in North Platte. The conference is meant to improve understanding of estrous cycles and estrus synchronization procedures, as well as male fertility and its affect on AI programs. NAAB annual convention and technical conference
Sept. 16-17, 17-18, Milwaukee, Wis.
The National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB) 58th Annual Convention will be Sept. 16-17, and the 20th Biennial Technical Conference will be Sept. 17-18. The Four Points Sheraton Hotel in Milwaukee will serve as the headquarters for both events. The convention is expected to draw about 200-250 people, and will follow the same scheduling format as the 2002 event. A variety of speakers will present scientific developments and discuss important technical issues in artificial insemination (AI).
