Registration for the quarterly meeting will begin at 8 a.m. at the Mueller Civic Center in Hot Springs. The issues-oriented meeting will explore such topics as drought, animal identification (ID), conservation, and other state and national policies. Refreshments will be provided by Wells Fargo Bank.
KSU Beef ID Academy
June 14-15; July 19-20; Aug. 2-3, Manhattan, Kan.
The Kansas State University (KSU) Beef ID Academy is an intense educational program designed to provide an in-depth perspective of radio frequency technology and its applications in the proposed U.S. Animal Identification Plan (USAIP). The two-day event includes a series of lectures and a hands-on laboratory, focusing on issues involving automatic ID and converting captured data into useful information. Attendance is limited. CUP Lab training session

The National CUP Lab and Technology Center will host a three-day ultrasound field technician training course. Topics will include the background of ultrasound, equipment and software setup, and hands-on scanning and laboratory interpretation. Four instructors certified through the Ultrasound Guidelines Council (UGC) will be on site to help with scanning techniques and will be able to offer insight and answer attendees questions.
The Nebraska Ranch Practicum 2004
Beginning June 16, North Platte and Whitman
The Nebraska Ranch Practicum is an eight-session, hands-on educational program lasting three seasons. Participants will learn and apply leading research in livestock production and marketing systems developed at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory (GSL).

15th Annual Nebraska Ranch Expo
June 16-17, Bassett
The annual Nebraska Ranch Expo with more than 400 commercial exhibits will be at the Rock County Fairgrounds in Bassett. Prime emphasis will be given to haying technology, the livestock industry and related products. There will be livestock exhibits, hay harvesting and handling demonstrations, two shows by national entertainers, prize drawings, an adopt-a-horse program, and an antique machinery show. Admission is free, and a shuttle service will be provided.
LMA Annual Meeting
June 17-18, Billings, Mont.
Livestock marketers will discuss the nuts and bolts of the proposed national livestock identification (ID) program, and its impact on their businesses, at the Livestock Marketing Association (LMA) annual meeting June 17-18 in Billings, Mont. Several ID technology firms are participating in LMAs first-ever trade show. Environmental regulations will also be discussed. The meeting will be held at the Holiday Inn Grand Montana. Ag energy conference

The conference, titled "Agriculture as a Producer and Consumer of Energy," is sponsored by Farm Foundation and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Office of Energy Policy and New Uses. The event is expected to be the first major comprehensive examination in a decade of agricultures energy role. Topics covered during the event will include investment opportunities, technological barriers, research needs, and agricultures need for and ability to produce energy. Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman will address the crowd of energy industry executives, commodity leaders, agribusiness managers, economists and government leaders expected to attend the two-day event. Southern Belle Invitation

The Tunica Arena and Exposition Center will host the Southern Belle Invitation, a national livestock event expected to draw a record crowd and bring more than 1,000 people exhibiting 600 horses. The Souths largest pleasure show futurity will spotlight world-renowned trainers and quarter horses competing for cash prizes, which exceeded $135,000 last year.
12th International Conference on Production Diseases in Farm Animals

Risk management workshop
July 23-24, Rock Falls, Ill.
The Illinois Beef Association (IBA), the National Cattlemens Beef Association (NCBA) and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) will host a risk management workshop titled, "Marketing Your Way to Profitability," in conjunction with the IBA annual meeting at the Deer Valley Country Club in Rock Falls. The session, taught by CME representatives and Cattle-Fax analysts, will feature hands-on training in using futures and options as marketing tools. Registration costs $100 for NCBA members or state affiliates, and $150 for nonmembers. One-day registration is also available for $60 and $75, respectively.
