First-Ever NWSS Angus Pen Heifer Show

For generations, the carload and pen Angus bull show has been a unique tradition at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver, Colo. New this year, exhibitors can enter their registered-Angus heifers in the competition that ranks their ability to present a uniform group of cattle.

The first-ever NWSS Angus Pen Heifer Show will take place Jan. 16, 2016, down in the Yards.

“We’re really looking forward to hosting the pen show for Angus heifers this year,” says Jaclyn Clark, American Angus Association events and education director. “The breed’s leading maternal traits will be on display as breeders take part in this one-of-a-kind competition.”

Nov. 20 is the ownership and entry deadline for all participants in the carload and pen show, Super-Point Roll of Victory (ROV) and junior Angus shows. No late entries will be accepted, and exhibitors can sign up online at www.nationalwestern.com.

Coverage of ARSBC

The Angus Media team coordinated online event coverage for the 2015 Applied Reproductive Strategies in Beef Cattle (ARSBC) symposium Aug. 17-18 in Davis, Calif. The website — www.appliedreprostrategies.com — offers the summary, proceedings paper, PowerPoint presentation and audio of each speaker’s presentation (as available) in the website’s Newsroom.

The University of California at Davis and the Beef Reproduction Task Force hosted this year’s symposium. Topics featured included an overview of reproductive management, strategies for artificial insemination (AI) success, the impact of environment and management on cow herd efficiency, the economic impact of reproductive technologies, advanced reproductive technologies, fertility in the male, the use of genomics in reproductive management, and development of replacement heifers.

K-State Offers Tour of Brazilian Farms and Agribusinesses

Kansas State University’s (K-State) Master of Agribusiness (MAB) program is offering travel to Brazil to learn about the food and agriculture industry in that country.

The trip is scheduled for June 11–20, 2016, and will include stops at an ethanol plant, crop and cattle farms, sugar cane and coffee farms, as well as professional visits to agricultural and food-related industries. Guided sightseeing tours will be arranged along with free time to explore and two days at the beautiful Iguazu waterfalls.

Agriculture is a principal driver of the Brazilian economy. While sugar cane has been a primary focus, Brazil has become one of the world's largest exporters of coffee, soybeans, beef, sugar cane, ethanol and frozen chickens.

More information about the trip can be found online or by contacting Mary Bowen at 785-532-4435 or mjbowen@ksu.edu. View the K-State release online for complete details.

Sustainable Use of Water in Ag

The South Carolina Farm Bureau Federation (SCFB) in partnership with the U.S. Farmers & Ranchers Alliance® (USFRA®) will host Food Dialogues®: South Carolina at the Brookland Baptist Banquet and Conference Center in West Columbia on Nov. 12.

This local panel discussion will focus on one of our state’s most prominent agricultural topics — water use. This topic is also of growing consumer concern across the country as water-related challenges continue and water allocated for agriculture is under discussion.

“The Food Dialogues are a place where individuals from across the food production spectrum can come together and have a constructive conversation about issues facing today’s agriculture,” said SCFB President David Winkles. “There are additional issues, however, that need to be addressed for our local consumers, including their concerns over water availability and use, and we are excited to answer their most pressing questions.”

Missouri Livestock Symposium Features Beef Cattle Program

According to Garry Mathes, chair of the 2015 Missouri Livestock Symposium, this year’s beef cattle section is intended to help producers economically, as well as plan for the future.

The program will be hosted Dec. 4-5 in Kirksville, Mo. Program details may be found at www.missourilivestock.com or by calling Mathes at 660-341-6625 or the Adair County Extension Center at 660-665-9866. There is no cost to attend the program and no registration is needed.

In addition to educational programs and speakers on all species of livestock (horses, beef cattle, sheep and meat goats), the Symposium also has a great program and speakers on forages, stock dogs and farm succession planning, to name just a few of the topics.

The beef cattle section features experts who will address timely topics important to cattle producers. Rick Rasby, University of Nebraska, will address “Beef Heifer Replacement Strategies” and give an update on the university’s beef cow-calf drylot production study.
